The first in a series of stories about how making the wrong move in an effort to save costs on your office IT service or hardware can actually cost you a lot more than you can ever save.

Follow the link below to read the first story about how a doctor’s office ends up paying over five grand to save twenty bucks a month on their ISP.

Cost savings IT money pits.

If you have such a story on an IT cost savings plan gone wrong then give us a post on this thread and tell us what you have seen.

How about a guy who wanted his file server dusted and cleaned on the inside while it was on.

Funny when the server crashed. Funny today that is.

Ok,

We have the next I.T. cost savings disaster in the queue thanks to a customer who bought an expensive Anti Spam hardware solution from a relative "in the business".

This is a classic case of: “You may not get everything you pay for, but you will most certainty pay for everything you get”.

Keep your eye on this thread and I hope to have the story ready by this time next week.

Here's one:

A company that sends out dozens of faxes from their PC's per day was using an all-in-one printer to fax through their network. After running out of toner, they check the price of a replacement cartridge- $150. After finding that they can purchase a brand new all-in-one unit for the same price, they decide to get rid of their old all-in-one solution and buy the new one.

Here's where their logic failed. The new all-in-one required software for each of the PC's to send faxes through the network. With 12 PC's to set up with software that takes about 45 minutes to install, their new printer/fax ended up costing them about  $1,000 in labor.

Ok the next story has been posted. This is the one about the guy who bought the thousand dollar Barracuda just to toss it in the trash a few months later when he found out the hard way who not to buy from.

Bryan,

Thanks for your input on the company who bought the new printer to save on toner and ended up spending close to $1000 in labor to get it installed.

I may have our next candidate for a story but the customer did luck out and find some information about his PTZ cameras on the SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) website.  Yes for some reason there was some info about this very unusual brand of camera posted on the Berkley Website. This was stroke of good luck as the vendor was a direct exporter from Hong Kong and all attempts to contact them or get any tech support were going no where.
