A poster on the tech forums at http://forums.somethingawful.com/ recently asked for everyone's opinions about what the best personal antivirus software is. Best defined as, "cleanest and fastest", using the fewest resources and so forth.

The majority opinion seemed to lean toward a program called NOD32 - one user said about it:

"Another vote for Nod32. I had the trial version and it was the best antivirus program I've used so far. I have used F-secure, Norton, McAfee and AntiVir before. I especially like how Nod32 understands to stay in the background and keep its "mouth" shut without constant popups and annoying stuff, which are so common with many other antivirus programs."

I still don't use antivirus on my home computers because I'm flat out too smart to download anything that would put me in danger, but if I did, I'd probably go with this.

I am a fan of AVGFree.  (The Free being critical)

It is very light and does a good job of "keeping its mouth shut"

Avast! Antivirus is also a good choice.  It runs in 32bit and 64bit environments alike, which is always a plus.

I use Trend Micro Internet Security. I've been using Trend Micro for over ten years.

Trend is a great product, we use OfficeScan and ServerProtect in our office on our client PC's and Servers.  One of the Trend suites is also what we recommend to all our clients, which trend suite depends on the customer and size of the LAN and requirements.

But for Best personal antivirus software I have to stick with AVG Free.  It does a great job and of course it has an unbeatable price tag.

Avast is also really cool because it has that startup scan you can run that scans before your PC is in windows, kinda like an old DOS level scan.  Really great tool.  It also has an unbeatable pricetag Wink
