You just authenticated with Microsoft on-line, so your software is legal right? Not according to the BSA, the Business Software Alliance.

The BSA is so bad, that James E. Gaskin calls them the Bully Software Alliance. Nothing counts according to the BSA, except a receipt with your company name on it.

Original disks don't count!
Serial Numbers, nope!
Copies of licenses, not according to the BSA.

Just like the IRS, the BSA is out to get you. And they will if you are ever audited. That's right, because they only audit you if you are turned in by a former employee, a vendor, a customer, even a competitor can turn you in.

An you are guilty until you prove your innocence. More on this later.

Obama has selected the Business Software Alliance's top antipiracy enforcer and general counsel, Neil MacBride, for a senior Justice Department post. Among other duties, MacBride has been responsible for the BSA's program that rewarded people for phoning in tips about suspected software piracy.

The elevation of RIAA and BSA lawyers in Obama's council must feel like a kick in the gut to the copyleft crowd, who spent over a year showering Obama with praise.

The Obama people were not quite the fresh new face I think most Americans were hoping for. But then again most Americans only believe what the media tells them and these things that don't look good for Obama don't get much attention. Imagine that.

It is important to note that the BSA is not a governmental entity and has no independent authority to levy an enforceable fine. Business Software Alliance fines are therefore merely offered in settlement to avoid litigation and, like all pre-litigation settlement offers, are negotiable with the help of experienced counsel.  Quoted from http://www.bsadefense.com/about-the-business-software-alliance-bsa-fines.asp

The BSA has no independent law enforcement authority of any kind. Its rights are derived from a power of attorney provided by its member software companies. Those companies have rights created by their software license agreements and under the laws protecting copyrights.  Quoted from http://www.bsadefense.com/about-the-business-software-alliance-bsa-faq.asp
