According to the official AMD webpage for their new Barcelona CPU:

".. there is simply no substitute for pure performance"

But it appears there may be a substitute for average performance.

According to ZDNET blog post the folks at AMD have done some shameful things to make their benchmark numbers look more interesting.

Simple things, like leaving out the top notch Intel products.  Like legally being correct on their marketing only when taken in the larger context of the unreadable fine print. And  finally it appears in other cases concerning their new Quad and Dual core CPU's they are just using bad data to make a pretty chart.

To read more about how AMD is “gaming the system” see the ZD Blog entry that was the source for this post.

AMD....  They had a brief moment when they were actually competitive with intel.

No one in IT has ever been fired for buying Cisco or PC's with Intel procs.

AMD second quarter financials were released just a few days ago  and they don't look good.

After reporting a $500 million loss in the first quarter of 07 they are now reporting a $600 million loss in the second quarter.

I don’t know how much longer they can take hits like that before the bottom falls out.

Intel is letting AMD have the low end computer market. If you ever see a pc advertised CHEAP you can be assured it will be an AMD.
