DAP Sticks with IBM Server Technology to Stay Flexible as Company Grows
IBM BladeCenter solution  increases scalability and lowers cost

Armonk, NY and Baltimore, MD...May 3, 2010: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that DAP Products, a leading marketer of patch and repair products for contractors and do-it-yourselfers, is replacing its aging server platform with an IBM BladeCenter solution for increased flexibility and scalability as the company continues to grow.

Based in Baltimore, MD, the mid-sized company’s products include some of the best known brands in home repair and can be found at 60,000 retail outlets in North America and on the web. DAP has a long track record of product innovation and growth through acquisition since its founding in 1865.

Having a reliable IT infrastructure is important to DAP as it introduces strategic initiatives to establish direct relationships with product users to build loyalty and market share. These initiatives include its “Building Green Living Green” Website (www.dap.com/green_set_mode.aspx), offering advice for both professionals and homeowners, and DAP Tips™ (http://www.dap.com/technical_library.aspx), one of the most comprehensive web sites in the home repair and improvement field.

To be better positioned for continued growth, DAP wanted a new infrastructure solution that would be flexible, easy to use and easy to maintain by a small IT staff.  An IP-based backup system was nearing end of life and several Windows operating systems running via Integrated xSeries Adapter cards had outlived their design capacity The company turned to its long-time solutions provider and IBM Business Partner, VSS, for a new system that would deliver high-availability and integrated disaster recovery while requiring less physical space, energy and time to manage..  The new server solution utilizes an IBM BladeCenter H Chassis supporting three IBM BladeCenter JS12 Express servers running the IBM i operating system and VMware virtualization software.  Working with VSS, DAP seamlessly migrated its applications to the new, more energy-efficient server platform and created a centralized backup recovery system using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager.

“Our new IT infrastructure gives us the technology foundation we need to remain flexible and scalable as our business grows. IBM BladeCenter enables us to downsize to a smaller server footprint without sacrificing user experience and introduce new applications without disruption to the business,” said Mike Garczynski, , DAP Products. “By working with a local and trusted IBM business partner, we now have a server solution that lets us avoid increased spending and staffing requirements while becoming more responsive to our customers.”

VSS is a full lifecycle technology solutions consultant and reseller. As a Premier IBM Business Partner, VSS is 100% certified in IBM Software and Hardware sales. With a proven track record and deep industry and business process expertise, VSS (www.vss-inc.com) mobilizes the right people, skills and technologies to help each customer improve its overall performance.

DAP’s roots go back to the late 1800s, when Robert H. Dicks and Elmer Wiggim began producing sealing wax for food-canning out of Dicks' garage in Dayton, Ohio. Today the DAP (www.dap.com) family includes such well known brands as Kwik Seal® Tub and Tile Adhesive Caulk, Alex Plus® Acrylic Latex with Silicone Caulk, 33® Glazing, Weldwood® Contact Cement, Plastic Wood® Filler, Latex Window Glazing, 100% DAP Silicone and Vinyl Spackling. The company also serves professional painters, remodelers and builders for both commercial construction and maintenance.
