Hitachi is set to release the first Terabyte drive for a pc sometime this first quarter of 2007.  It will cost around $399 which is actually less than the price to 2 500gb hard drives.  This will be a great addtion to DVR servers that need extra space for saved video files.

I think I will wait a year or so before I use one of these for storage. They are using a new technology as far as how the bits are written on the platters. I will be curious to see if they are as reliable as smaller capacity drives. After all, they are cramming an awfull lot of bits on the same size platters. There is a short animated video about this at http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/3A60F00EE490F11686256FDC004BCDC2

Anyone read that little blub in the August issue of Maximum PC about the work going to shrink the size of the drive heads? I don't have the mag with me here at the office but the potential increase in storage capacity was off the charts.

Rick, Thanks for that great link. I went ahead and embedded it below.

This would make a great School House Rock video.

Imagine what this means. Storage is virtually unlimited for video, music, photos and other data. It's the holy grail of computing.

10x storage?! That is a huge amount of storage potential.  This video is pretty impressive, it could be very informative for less technical users. Definitely School House Rock-ish.

Well, it has been 2 years since the first post.  The 1TB drives have been out for quite some time now and as with all technology, the price has dropped drastically.  The Hitachi 1TB drive can now be found going for as little as $79.99
