Ever notice that once you fix your friends computer, all future problems of the computer become yours.
They ususally start of with something like.... "...since you fixed my computer I can no longer....." Sometimes I think I'd be better off not fixing them in the first place. |

I absolutely hate fixing friends or family's computers, or even recommending what they should buy. People will ask, "what would you get?" and I'd point them to a mid-range Dell, more than capable or handing their needs... and then 5 years later they call, "This computer sucks. YOU recommended it."
Seriously? It is definitely better to just stay out of the friend and family computer business.

I think relatives can be even worse. They just assume you know everything in the world about computers and software. And when they have a problem, they try to be nice, but you can tell they aren't always happy.
Lose, Lose situation. |

This is a lesson I have learned the hard way, but learned it I have. I work on computers outside of work for my mom and my grandmother, that is all.
I came home from work one day a few years ago (This was after I had learned not to work on computers for family) and a cousin I had not seen in years was in my living room, he had his PC with him. I refused to work on it and have not seen him since, hopefully the next time I see him is at his funeral. I have better things to do than spend 4 hours of my Saturday cleaning viruses and spyware from some friend / distant relative's computer, just so they can go look at porn and hose it up again the next week. My only advice to anyone who is not capable of being an ass and telling someone NO to fixing their computer, DO NOT ever accept any kind of reward or payment, then you DO OWN ALL FUTURE PROBLEMS.

Great thread!
I absolutely agree one should never mix friends and computers. I waste enough time on my own computer fixing my own stupid mistakes... I find it is best to fake "ignorance" when it comes to talking about computers around family. |
