IBM researchers have displayed a prototype optical transceiver chip set that they claim will allow people to download movies or share data on the internet eight times faster than current technology allows. The set can move data at 160gb/s by representing the data as light pulses instead of electrons and could be in use as soon as 2010.

The package for the set would be only 3.25mm by 5.25mm in size, small enough to integrate into a printed circuit board. A PC using that board would be able to reduce the download time of a feature-length movie from 30 minutes to one second, according to IBM.
