Male enhancement, weight loss, teeth whiteners... If you are infected and part of a botnet, a collection of PCs compromised with a virus that gives control to a remote computer, you may be sending out SPAM on someone else's behalf.

Here is what ZDnet researchers found after watching a few small botnets.

"These small botnets are also exclusively used for some of the sophisticated managed spam services currently offered on the underground marketplace. For instance, the managed spamming service exclusivelly profiled by Zero Day last year, was using only 5000 infected hosts for the purpose of sending 1 million spam messages. Another variation of it was offering only 1672 infected hosts, and was still capable of spamming 3215 emails per minute."

ISPs enforce SPAM policies and will often shut your internet access off if a large volume of SPAM is being reported from your IP address. This could mean a home user getting their internet access disabled, or even could shut down an entire business if the threats aren't removed.

Just another compelling reason to run a trustworthy Anti-Virus program and do regular scans of your entire hard drive.

These Bot-Nets are rampant.  AVG do not do a good job of catching them either.

I was doing a sales call last week to a nice new office. They had an amazing server room, all new Dell PC's.. and not a single AV program to be found anywhere. What could their PC support people be thinking.. or not thinking, to have such a nice network and no Anti Virus. Epic Fail!

Don't Dells come with Norton or something pre-installed and a 30day free trial?
It's hard for me to image anyone using a computer without an anti-virus program installed.
I'm a big fan of AVAST (I used to use AVG until I got infected once)...
I also run malwarebytes on a semi-regular basis.
Would you say with these two programs I am protected from these zombie-takeover-tactics?
Going to a trade show and looking for trade show displays? Then please consider the trade show displays here. Convenient online ordering 24/7/365. :)

It is hard to believe but it is very common.  We recently took over support of an office that had NO anti-virus or malware protection on any of the computers, only the servers.

Spam is definitely not going away, especially nowadays when the whole process that used to require a decent investment of time and resources, has matured into an emerging market for managed service providers of spamming services whose web based interfaces successfully mimic the look and feel of anti-spam appliances.

If you are like me and define SPAM as any electronic communication you did not ask for and derive no value from.. well yeah, that's everything you all have ever sent me. LOL

Asking “what is a spammer” has always been to me one of those; you will know it when you see it, type of conundrums.  Obviously when you signed up for a website and they send you a blast email letting you know of sales, it’s not spam.  Why is that not spamming?  Well you signed up for it.

“Email spam, also known as unsolicited bulk Email (UBE), junk mail, or unsolicited commercial email (UCE), is the practice of sending unwanted email messages, frequently with commercial content, in large quantities to an indiscriminate set of recipients.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_%28electronic%29)

There is a large difference between companies’ emails and spam, a company will not hide behind illogical emails like aglkjwglkewj@ghehe.com allow you to prevent their emails, a spammer is not so nice.

Keep in mind what is being spammed, it’s not hey looks at this good deal its….

"Most forum spam consists of links to external sites, with the dual goals of increasing search engine visibility in highly competitive areas such as weight loss, pharmaceuticals, gambling, pornography, real estate or loans, and generating more traffic for these commercial websites. Some of these links contain code to track the spambot's identity if a sale goes through, when the spammer behind the spambot works on commission." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forum_spam)
